Thorium-Based Reactors Research Continues
On August 15, the Academy of Sciences of the People's Republic of Chongro issued directives to the Beqing University of Technology, Kim Il Sung University, Shendu Jiao Tong University and numerous other universities and colleges to begin comprehensive research into thorium-based nuclear reactors.
A major consultative meeting was subsequently held between the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection, Ministry of Sciences, Ministry of State Construction and Ministry of Energy.
Present were:
Doo Son Yun, Minister of Land and Environment Protection;
Choi Dong Myeong, Minister of Sciences;
Ri Sun, Minister of State Construction;
Cha Jung Eun, Minister of Energy;
alongside numerous scientific, engineering and economic officials.
The meeting was presided over by Jo Yong Won, Deputy Chief Secretariat of the Workers' Party of Chongro.
The participants conducted an extensive examination of the advantages and difficulties associated with thorium-based reactor technology.
Particular attention was given to:
long-term fuel availability;
reactor safety;
radioactive waste management;
construction costs;
energy efficiency;
environmental protection;
industrial applications;
and the possibility of establishing a domestic nuclear-fuel cycle.
The meeting stressed that no technological decision should be made merely for the sake of prestige.
The needs and safety of the people must remain the first consideration.
Researchers have been instructed to investigate whether thorium-based systems could eventually supplement or replace certain conventional energy sources while providing reliable electricity for industrial production, transportation and residential consumption.
The participants unanimously agreed that further research could potentially establish thorium reactors as an important component of the future energy system of Chongro and contribute to international scientific cooperation in the peaceful utilization of nuclear technology.
